“Tectonics of Teaching” will focus on the art and craft of what we do; teach technology to design students the core mission of BTES.
The 2013 conference seeks to engage participants in lively discourse about technical teaching in order to educate the next generation of architects. We see technology education as a critical path towards comprehensive and competent professional practice that responds to challenges and addresses needs of the contemporary world. As such, we will discuss both teaching and practice, as a single mutually informing continuum.
Thematic questions include: What does it mean to be an architect with competency in technical areas that are increasingly driving design projects? What should be taught? Who should teach it? Is digital design helping or hurting the learning of fundamentals? What is the relationship between building technology teaching and architectural practice? What are effective teaching models that place building technology in the center of design discourse? The conference will reach out to academics and practitioners to address these questions in a collegial and energizing atmosphere. A detailed call for papers can be found here.
The conference will meet on Friday, July 12th and Saturday, 13th, 2013, with an optional daylong architectural walking tour of Newport, Rhode Island on Thursday before the conference. Outstanding keynote speakers include MacArthur Fellow John Ochsendorf and Award-Winning Structural Engineer/Educator, Eric Hines.
This conference serves as a platform for educators, students, researchers, and professionals to explore, examine, and exhibit their work that continues this trajectory of convergence among various fields.
